OCAC artist-in-residence, Daniel Mellis, and David Gabriel of COLAB Architecture will speak on the phenomenon of architects making artist’s book as well as artist book-makers work on architecture and the built environment. The event is in conjunction with the 2011 Portland Architecture and Design Festival which runs the month of October.

Call to Artists - Rocky Mountain Art Book Collection
Rocky Mountain Art Book Collection, is an exhibition project (with suggested themes) where the participants will receive a blank sketch pad to do whatever they please artistically over the course of four months. All forms of mediums are welcome. This project will be localized to communities throughout the Rocky Mountain region but also encouraging those across the country or the world to participate. The project encourages anyone from anywhere who want to be a part of it. Anyone meaning, anyone: kids, parents, students, seniors, writers, artists, dreamers, wanderers, the guy next door, the crazy cat lady, the ski bum, the couch surfer, anyone. After completed, participants will then submit their notebooks to be on display in an exhibition that will take place the third week in January of 2012.

Workshop fee: $50
Paul will discuss and demonstrate the adjustment, honing and maintenance of OCAC’s board shears, guillotines and other equipment. He plans to spend time with each of the participants, answering questions about their personal equipment. Bring photos/diagrams/info. of your equipment to aid his understanding of your questions.

Portland’s Em-Space has some pretty awesome classes coming up. The series on boxmaking sounds especially fun:

Each class: $120 ($108 for members) + $15 Supply Fee
Entire series of 5: $100 ea ($80 for members) + $15 Supply Fee
In this series of classes, several different structures will be covered. We will build on what is learned in each class. Students may choose to take the whole series at a discount, or select individual classes. We will learn the fundamentals of making boxes including precise measuring, cutting board, helpful tools, and working with various materials.

We will begin day one by making a box with a fitted lid. On day two, we will learn to make a hinged lid box to house loose sheets, a book, or any other treasures that need a handmade home.

Paper boxes and wraps will be the focus of this section. Learn several box structures made with folded paper including four flap folders, a matchbox, slip case, and pocket folios.

Instructor: Rory Sparks
In this section, we will make boxes with drawers and compartments. Learn different ways of constructing dividing walls and play with handles, toggles and pulls for drawers. We will make a secret compartment box to hide and reveal your treasures and wow your friends.

Slipcases and clamshell boxes are the topic for this class. Precise fitting and proper material selection for protection of books & artwork will be discussed.

In this session, we will explore special shapes and projects. We will start with a round box with a fitted lid. Students are encouraged to bring an object or collection to design a box for on the second day. We will go over constructing special shapes and working with alternative materials.
